Cookie Monsta is easily one of my favourite Dubstep artists, his basslines are always heavy and the drops are always spot on. If you have never heard of Cookie Monsta, well…. then you probably don’t know dubstep, although I’m sure you would recognize him from tracks such as “Ginger Pubes” & “Antichrist”. Cookie Monsta produces for the label “Circus Records”, which if you don’t know is a kick-ass label which hosts some major talent. Doctor P & Flux Pavilion, ever heard of them? yeah thought so, well they are the driving force behind this label and are putting out some BIG tunes at the moment so i suggest you keep an eye on them.

Over the past few months i have grown rather fond of the more underground genres, in particular, the more underground EDM (electronic dance music) genres. I’m not exactly sure I know what has brought this on but i have a theory. I have started listening mainly to techno, detroit techno, minimal and deep house, these are all very minimalistic genres. My theory is that with age comes wisdom and with wisdom comes reason. A couple of months back i wasn’t able to listen to any sort of techno or its sub genres, i found it boring, simple and way too minimal for my tastes. when my friends would try and reason with me and explain that its not all about high pitch synths, crazy breakdowns and alternating riffs, i would dismiss their reasoning immediately. However with time these genres grew on me and i began to appreciate them more and more. I think that my dabbling in music production helped me understand why these minimal genres are much more than a series of kicks and clicks, my working on the production of my own tracks allowed me to realise how much time and effort goes into even the most minimal tracks, its not just the composition either, its the mastering, compression, effects, panning and all the other production techniques that follow. Like they say, once you produce, you can never listen to music in the same way, you end up dissecting every element of a track, where as most people hear a riff and a beat, you hear all the panning and effects that are going on in the background, not only do you hear them but you can put a name to them as well. These new listening skills don’t only apply to listening to tracks, they effect the way you want to listen to music, they allow you to differentiate between a good pair of speakers and a bad pair. I also believe that it wasn’t only the producing that aided me into my musical maturity, i believe it was also partly to do with experiencing the music live. Earlier this year i attended fabric night club in London, a well known EDM establishment and is considered as one of the best night clubs in the world. I entered with an open mind as i hadn’t listened to much of these minimal genres before so it was a new experience for me. Being inside the club made me feel equal, everyone in the club is friendly and everyone is free to dance as they please. The more and i listened to the thud of the kicks and the growl of the bass the more i realised that this music was far superior to any other genre within EDM. The night went really well and i came out with a whole new perspective on music. When going to a club like fabric, music comes first, socializing second. Now i have finally reached my peak, a few months after fabric and i believe that i have reached the final stage of musical maturity. If i can listen to a song that consists of the same 4 notes and a kick drum for 10 minutes with an open mind then i can listen to anything. I believe that when you realise music is more than just guitars and singing and can accept a track for not just the sound but the work the author has put into it then you truly have reached your peak, i believe when you can go to a club solely to listen to the music being played and not just to stand at the bar and socialise you have truly reached your peak and i believe when you can listen to johnny cash one minute and listen to minimal techno the next, you have truly reached your peak. On a final note sometimes i feel bad for people when they listen to music, i know people who are much older than me and have not yet reached their peak, this brings me to the conclusion that not everyone is made to reach there peak, some people may never get there and for them i feel sad, music truly is a blessing and its a shame not everyone can enjoy all music.
